A cleaner version of dishwasher powder was one of the very first non-toxic swaps we made in our home, and honestly, it felt like a bigger challenge than I expected. When you start reading ingredient labels, you quickly realize how many conventional products are filled with synthetic fragrances, harsh chemicals, and unnecessary fillers. Since we were eating off of dishes washed in our dishwasher at least three times a day, this was an important swap for us.

Why I Stopped Using Store-Bought Dishwasher Detergent
One thing that also pushed me away from conventional dishwasher pods was learning more about what’s often hiding in them, especially “forever chemicals,” These chemicals are sometimes used in manufacturing to create water-resistant or grease-fighting properties, but they don’t break down easily in the environment or the body. Over time, they can accumulate, which is why they’ve become a growing concern in conversations around natural wellness and family wellness. While not every brand is transparent about their full ingredient list, the lack of clarity alone was enough for me to start looking for safer alternatives. Making a simple clean dishwashing powder at home gives me peace of mind knowing exactly what’s in it, while supporting a truly non-toxic home.
Why I Started Making My Own DIY Dishwasher Detergent
At first, I tried to find a “better” option at the store. While there are some cleaner brands available, I found they were often inconsistent in availability, still not as “clean” as I wanted, or simply too expensive to use regularly. We were going through dishwasher detergent quickly, and I didn’t love the feeling of constantly restocking something that didn’t fully align with our values.
This is something I see come up often when transitioning to a non toxic home, you start by replacing one or two items, but then realize how many everyday products don’t have great alternatives that are both accessible and affordable. That’s usually the point where many people feel stuck.
For me, that’s when I started exploring more DIY Non-Toxic Living recipes.
I used to think making your own cleaners would be complicated or time-consuming, and I was intimidated by the idea. But what I discovered is that some of the most effective recipes are actually the simplest. This DIY dishwasher detergent is a perfect example of that.
A Simple, Effective Clean Dishwashing Powder
After a bit of research and some trial and error, I landed on a formula that checked all the boxes: effective, affordable, easy to make, and made with ingredients I felt good about using in our home. It also uses the same ingredients as a lot of my other non-toxic living recipes, so I can buy ingredients in bulk and save even more! It took less than five minutes to put together, and once I started using it consistently, I realized I didn’t need to keep searching for store-bought alternatives anymore.
This clean dishwashing powder works by combining a few simple ingredients that each play an important role: helping to break down grease, soften water, and leave dishes clean without residue. We have hard water and this recipe still works as great as any store bought version we tried. And unlike many conventional options, there’s no overpowering artificial scent left behind.
DIY Lemon Rind Rinse AID
If you’re already switching to a homemade dishwasher detergent, it makes sense to replace your rinse aid too.
This simple lemon rinse solution helps:
- Reduce water spots
- Cut grease naturally
- Leave dishes fresh without artificial fragrance
Ingredients
- white vinegar
- lemon peels
Instructions
- Collect your lemon peels and add to glass jar
- Pour vinegar over top
- Let sit for 24–48 hours to infuse
How to Use
Pour into your dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment and use as you normally would.
A Simple Alternative
If you want something even easier, you can use plain white vinegar on its own as a rinse aid. It’s incredibly effective and requires zero prep.
A Quick Note
Depending on your water hardness, you may need to adjust slightly:
- Add a bit more vinegar if you notice spotting
- Reduce if you have very soft water

Washing Soda – Used for my Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe as well.
Borax – great for laundry as well.
Sea Salt – I use the cheapest I can find.
Citrus Essential Oils – Oils are a lovely option to scent the detergent, but not necessary. I skip them most of the time to save money.
Glass Jar and Scoop – This is the perfect sized jar for my 32 oz/4 cup/1 quart recipe and comes with a wooden scoop.
One of the things I love most about this recipe is how well it fits into a realistic rhythm of life. You don’t need to be “perfect” or make everything from scratch to embrace natural wellness. It’s about making intentional swaps that reduce your overall exposure and support your family in a practical way. We added a new recipe one at a time. Not all at once causing overwhelm. I know myself and that is not a sustainable tactic.
Cost Breakdown
This 4 cup/1 quart recipe, breaks down to 32 loads (at 2 TBSP each load). The total coast per batch is approximately $4.50 CND/$3.25 US.
Each 2 TBSP load cost approximately .14 cents CDN/.10 cents US.
Compared to “cleaner” grocery store options, my recipe is 50-75% less expensive.
Creating a homemade home doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. In fact, it can feel really empowering. When you know exactly what’s going into the products you’re using every day, there’s a sense of confidence and simplicity that comes with it. A type of little life hack in my mind!
This recipe has become a staple in our home. Not just because it works, but because it removes one more layer of decision fatigue. No more wondering which brand to buy, no more running out unexpectedly, and no more spending extra money on something we can easily make ourselves.
If you’re just getting started with creating a non-toxic home, this is a great place to begin. It’s simple, cost-effective, and a small change that can make a meaningful difference over time.
