A good quality moisturizer made with simple, clean ingredients is something I cannot live without. I have a very uncomplicated morning and bedtime skin care routine. I wash my face, gently dry it, and apply a nourishing cream. That is about it.
I have always prioritized washing my face before bed, no matter how tired I am. Especially if I have worn makeup that day. Even though I choose very clean makeup products, I still do not want makeup, natural oils, dirt, and the day’s build-up sitting on my skin overnight.
For quite a while, I used straight tallow as my facial moisturizer. I enjoyed how rich and nourishing it felt at first, but after about a year, I noticed that my skin did not seem to absorb it as. Never completely loving the natural scent of tallow, I was curious to try something different and see how my skin responded.
Since I love making my own natural body products and household cleaning products, I usually have a collection of butters, carrier oils, essential oils, and other raw ingredients on hand. After experimenting with different combinations, I created this whipped hydrating face cream. I have been really enjoying how it feels on my skin.

A Rich Moisturizer for Normal to Dry Skin
Having normal to dry skin, I do not mind using a richer cream that takes a little while to fully absorb. This is not a light, water based lotion. It is a deeply nourishing, whipped oil based moisturizer that softens as it warms on your skin.
Some people suggest waiting until facial oils are completely absorbed before applying makeup. Personally, I enjoy applying my concealer and foundation shortly after using this cream. The moisturizer helps my makeup blend beautifully and gives my skin a soft, natural looking finish.
I’m loving the healthy glow it gives my skin during the summer months, when I have a bit of a tan. Rather than looking dry or overly matte, my skin looks moisturized, fresh, and naturally luminous.
Although I created this cream specifically for my face, the ingredients are incredibly versatile. It can also be applied to the neck, chest, hands, elbows, knees, heels, or anywhere else that needs extra moisture.

Why I Chose These Ingredients
Shea butter forms the moisturizing base of the cream. It is rich in naturally occurring fatty acids that help soften the skin and support its protective barrier.
Cocoa butter adds firmness and a luxurious texture. It creates a protective layer over the skin that helps reduce moisture loss. It smells delicious too!
Lanolin is one of the most intensely moisturizing ingredients in this blend. It has an impressive ability to hold moisture against the skin, making it useful for very dry, rough, or weathered areas.
Jojoba oil is also more resistant to oxidation than many delicate carrier oils, which helps support the overall stability of the cream.
Rosehip seed oil contains essential fatty acids and naturally occurring antioxidant compounds that support a smoother, more even looking complexion. It is a beautiful choice for women who want to nourish dry skin while also supporting its elasticity and natural radiance.
Sweet almond oil is gentle, moisturizing, and rich in skin softening fatty acids. It helps the cream spread easily and gives it a silky consistency. Almond oil is especially soothing when skin feels dull, flaky, or depleted.
Vitamin E oil provides additional nourishment while also acting as an antioxidant within the formula. It can help support soft, conditioned skin, while also helping slow the oxidation of the other oils.
Arrowroot powder gives the whipped cream a smoother, lighter finish without removing the deeply moisturizing qualities that make the recipe so effective.
Essential oils – More is not necessarily better, especially when the product will be applied close to the eyes. Omit if your skin is extremely sensitive.

If you find yourself with leftover butters and oils after making this face cream, you can easily turn some of them into a simple natural deodorant. You will only need to add baking soda. See my popular and highly effective deodorant recipe here.
Simple Skin Care That Feels Luxurious
I like that this whipped face cream feels luxurious without containing synthetic fragrance, or petroleum based moisturizers. It is rich, simple, and made from ingredients that each offer something beneficial to the skin.
As women age, the skin often produces less natural oil and may begin to feel drier or thinner. A nourishing blend of butters, waxes, and plant oils can help protect the skin’s moisture barrier and improve the appearance of softness, smoothness, and radiance.
The cream does not promise to stop the natural aging process, and I do not think healthy skin care needs to be about fighting every line or sign of age. For me, it is about supporting my skin, keeping it comfortable and hydrated, and enjoying a simple daily ritual made with ingredients I feel good about using.

Cost Breakdown to Make this Recipe
This whipped hydrating face cream recipe costs approximately $11.25 CAD or $8.25 USD to make.
The recipe produces roughly seven ounces of moisturizer, bringing the cost to approximately $6.40 CAD or $4.70 USD per four ounce jar. The initial cost of purchasing every ingredient is higher, but each package can be used to prepare several batches and many of the ingredients can also be used in other homemade skin care recipes. Prices will vary depending on the brands, package sizes, sales, and availability in your area.
